What are small everyday habits that can vastly improve your life?
Nelson Wang, Entrepreneur, Writer & 10 Years of Experience in Technology & Startups
When I was young, I set out some lofty goals for myself including becoming a VP at the age of 30, building a company, creating a product from scratch and being in incredible shape (I wanted to be like Tony Horton).
I hit a few of those goals and missed on a lot of them. Why?
I forgot to create the daily habits that would get me there.
Looking back, I wish I had taken on these 7 daily habits to vastly improve my life:
1. Drink at least one green smoothie - Avoid processed foods. I know, it's tough. I love cereal, chicken nuggets, burgers, pizza, salami and soda just like 90% of the world out there. I literally used to eat 30 chicken nuggets in one sitting as a kid.
Sure, it tasted awesome in the moment. But I always felt pretty lethargic afterwards.
In the last 3 years, I've slowly replaced processed foods with natural, whole foods like fruits and vegetables. Today, I'm in the best shape of my life.
Here's how I did it. I started off by replacing one meal (breakfast) with a vegetable and fruit smoothie. It tasted awful the first few weeks. But after experimenting with different recipes and through repetition, it started to taste normal. Soon, it began to taste delicious. Now I can't live without it. I literally drink on average 3-4 vegetable and fruit smoothies in a day.
I really recommend a nicer blender since that'll make the texture a lot more consistent as well. Check out the Nutribullet or Vitamix (I use both - one for home and the other at the office).
Treat your body well. It's the only one you've got.
2. Skip the caffeine - You don't need it. Caffeine is a short term fix. While you might feel more focused for a few hours, you'll also potentially get jittery and have a hard time falling asleep at night. That happened to me all the time.
I used to drink a ton of caffeine. I was flying to over 50 cities in a year all over the U.S. for work and trying to adjust to the different time zones. Fueled by intense morning routines of caffeine, I was productive for about a year and a half...before I completely burned out. One day, I literally just felt completely exhausted.
It's just not sustainable.
Instead of spending $3 a day on coffee, try taking on a natural way to keep yourself focused and awake like exercise. Speaking of exercise...
3. Exercise in the morning - Drop the caffeine and try working out every morning. Even if it's a short work out.
Some days, I do a full one hour workout. Other days, I squeeze in a 30 minute workout.
Either way, I feel refreshed and focused in the morning. It's drastically reduces my stress as well. When I have to make hard decisions, my mind is much better prepared since it's calm and relaxed.
4. Practice gratitude - Your thoughts become your reality. If you think about negative things, you'll project an aura of negativity.
Don't let yourself fall into that trap. Stop worrying. Stop stressing out.
How? It's simple.
Start practicing gratitude. Everyday, take 5 minutes for yourself and think of 3 things you're grateful for. Take it a step further and say it out loud to yourself.
5. Challenge yourself to learn - If you're growing as a person, you'll feel a sense of pride and achievement.
You can do this by reading a book, learning from others on Quora, reading articles on new subjects, learning a new language with a free app like Duolingo or spending time with a mentor to learn from their experiences. As an example I practiced writing for two years before launching my blog www.ceolifestyle.io

6. Set 3 big goals - Instead of trying to knock a list of 10 things to accomplish for the day, try this instead:
Focus on the 3 most important tasks that you absolutely have to accomplish for the day.
This forces you to prioritize and should help you generate the most productive day possible.
7. Smile - Did you know smiling can make you healthier? Smiling has been associated with reduced stress, lower blood pressure and mood enhancing hormone levels.
A Penn State University study also discovered that when people smile, they are perceived by others to appear more like-able, courteous and competent.
Plus, as an added bonus, you can brighten someone's day.
And that's pretty freaking awesome.
